Early morning sun illuminates the mountain slopes opposite, while Kasanombe airstrip still remains in shadow. The airstrip, 5400' up in the Finisterre Mountains on the Huon Peninsula north of Lae, runs east to west. Because of its slope you have to land to the east and take-off to the west. Early in the morning is the best time to go there because the weather has the habit of becoming bad quite early in the day, but the sun rising over the mountains as you come into land can be blinding. Careful timing for your arrival is essential. |
