The Lutheran Development Service co-ordinates a lot of
development work in the Lae area. MAF recently flew equipment and materials
into several airstrips as part of a project to provide potable water to
remote villages.
Ironically, despite the high rainfall, not all villages have a good water
supply as they are built on mountain ridges. Tribal fighting and the need
for security has often taken precedence over the availability of water on
a daily basis. In most villages the women would walk substantial distances
to collect water for drinking and cooking.
