When roads are built, bridges have to be constructed too in order to cross the numerous rivers and ravines. The government has had a road and bridge construction programme in operation for some years to improve communication in rural areas. Unfortunately, once the roads are built routine maintenance becomes a problem with the high rainfall and fairly common earth tremors. On this occasion bridge components were flown into Ogeranang, an airstrip in Morobe Province on the Huon Peninsula. On another occasion everything for bridge construction was flown to Guwasa in Chimbu Province where the Faith Mission, working with the Save the Children Fund, built two bridges across rivers which periodically flash-flooded and had claimed several lives. |
