The Independent State of Papua New Guinea, to give the
country its full title, is just south of the equator and immediately north
of Australia.
The population is currently about 5.5 million in a land area roughly the
same as the United Kingdom. The population is divided up by about 860 different
languages and about 75% of the people live in rural areas which are often
very remote.
The country has extensive lowlands in the south and north which are divided
by a high central mountain range, the highest point of which is Mount
Wilhelm at just under 15,000 feet. |
