Vanimo is on the north coast close to the Indonesian (Papuan) border and about as far away from the capital of Port Moresby as it is possible to get and still be within the country.

Ships bring supplies to the small town from main centres such as Lae and Madang. A road runs through to the Indonesian border along which it is possible to drive all the way to Jayapura, provided you have the appropriate paperwork at the border.
