Just on the outskirts of Port Moresby, the capital of PNG small communities can be seen developing.

The capital is in a rain shadow and very often the hills are brown and parched, it is relatively unusual to see them as green as this.

Despite being the capital, there are no road connections from the city to any other major town in PNG. Neither is there such a thing as a railway. So the only way to travel is by air, or by sea around the coast to Lae or Madang, and then by road up the Highlands Highway.

You can imagine the logistical problems and expenses caused by the lack of a transport infrastructure. With the mountainous terrain, high rainfall and geological instability, building roads would be a huge expense with an equal amount being needed to maintain them. These are resources that PNG just does not have.
