In the lowlands, both on the coast as in this picture, and also inland, houses are built on posts. This provides protection against flooding and also keeps the house cooler in the hot and humid lowland climate. The houses in the lowlands are thin-walled and have open spaces in the walls to allow the breeze to ventilate them. There is little change in temperature during the year and the days are hot, and the nights warm. |
