Around Mount Hagen the traditional huts are usually rectangular in shape and thatched with kunai grass. This grass is soft compared with the tough reeds for thatching old houses in England, and has to be replaced every few years.

Tucked into the side of the mountain on the Kuda Ridge behind Mount Hagen, the kaukau, or sweet potato, gardens can be seen in the foreground.
