The highlands of PNG have a lot of rain during the year, ranging from 10-20 metres according to the location. Drainage of the gardens is therefore quite an issue and the villagers are experts at making beautifully straight trenches to allow the rain to run away. Without this the tubers of the kaukau (sweet potato) would rot. |
