The Finisterre Mountains run down the northern side of the Markham Valley. To the north, within about 50 km they climb from sea level to about 14,000', and then drop equally quickly to the Markham Valley to the south. To describe them as dramatic is an understatement.

As you would expect, there is some amazing scenery in this area. It can also be a place for amazingly quick changes of weather. Many airstrips here can only be reached before about 10 a.m. in the morning. After this time warm air rising from the coast forms cloud as it cools, covering the highland communities in fog. The transition from almost totally clear, to completely fogged in may take only a few minutes.
