This is the main means of transport on all the major river systems and around the coast. Trees are hollowed out with great skill until they are a fraction of a centimetre thick. Quite often they are then scorched inside to help seal the wood.

As well as having great skill in their manufacturer, the local people can handle these craft in strong currents, usually standing upright as the use their carved paddle to direct the canoe.
